When we discussed the Global Class Mindset, we focused on the mindset necessary at the Company Level to succeed in reaching global scale. In this module, we build on the Global Class Mindset and explore the right mindset at both the individual and local team levels that will increase your organization’s likelihood of success in growing in international markets.

Through our research talking to executives who led global growth for the world’s fastest-growing companies we learned that hiring, people, and team-building were the hardest, but the most important part of reaching global scale.

Having the right team serves as a foundation for all of the other aspects essential to scaling globally, namely navigating the market selection, validation, and localization processes, and then maintaining the right structures and operations to successfully operate at global scale.

In this module, you will learn about the catalysts for successful global growth of the world’s fastest-growing companies. You will better understand how to build this mindset within yourself and get a better understanding of the right characteristics required for local teams to be effective in finding traction and product-market fit in international markets.

What questions will this module answer?

After reviewing this module, you will have answers to the following questions

  • What characteristics/mindsets are important within people that are part of global growth teams? (both at HQ and in local markets)

  • How do you find, acquire and nurture this type of (Interpreneurial) Talent?

  • How YOU can develop an this unique (Interpreneurial) Mindset ?

  • What kinds of skills and characteristics are necessary in building successful local teams?

  • How do I bridge between local and company knowledge to ensure local teams are set up for success? - ensuring Local Teams understand the company culture and way of doing things, while ensuring those involved in global expansion have a proper understanding of the local market.

  • How can I create the Right Team Building System for Success?

In answering these questions we will introduce you to the concept of the [IMAGE: Interpreneur] Interpreneur], the catalyst for successful global growth, including showing you how you can build these attributes and how to build the right teams to succeed in new markets.

We will also introduce you to the Global Class Team Building Framework, a framework that helps you build the right local teams, that not only possess an Interpreneurial mindset but also a set of characteristics that are crucial to operating a team away from HQ, while also maintaining a balance between local knowledge and company knowledge without over indexing toward one or the other. The wrong team won’t effectively localize your business for the new market or won’t maintain the right partnership model with HQ, leading to less trust a misalignment of culture, and other key issues.

Why does what is discussed in this module matter?

As mentioned, people are the most important ingredient to building a global company, and this not only applies to who you hire in local markets but everyone who touches global growth across all functions of your company.

Here is what we have seen with companies on their expansion journeys. Typically companies will make one of two mistakes:

1. They will send someone from headquarters who has built trust and a reputation within the company to launch local markets. While having cultural alignment and knowing how to get things done at HQ is crucial for the success of a local market, they lack a native understanding of the local market, and without the right structure will waste time and money attempting to do things the company way, without being mindful of the nuances of the local way, and having to take time to discover the localizations required to succeed locally.

2. Hire someone from the local market, but not provide the formal structure (beyond spending a couple of weeks at HQ) to have the company knowledge to succeed in making the changes to the go-to-market and operational models required to succeed locally. Moreover, the cultural mindset outlined in this module isn’t even on the radar of most companies, so leaders don’t identify and nurture this type of mindset within the team, to the detriment of the whole company.

What risks exist if you aren’t mindful of this aspect of global growth?

As outlined at the beginning of the course, building the wrong team is one of the major mistakes that cause global expansion initiatives to fail. There are risks in hiring new team members, both at HQ and in local markets, that you must be mindful of. Having the right team with the right mindset sets you up for success, but building the wrong team will most certainly lead to much wasted time and money, and often the ultimate failure of expansion initiatives.

After you complete this module you will be able to…

Adopt the right individual mindset to succeed in contributing to your company’s global growth (the Interpreneur), while identifying the nurturing this important mindset in others. You will also have the right foundation to build effective teams both at HQ and in local markets to support global expansion.
