There are a number of ways, many of which aren’t life-altering, that you can develop aspects of the Interpreneurial Mindset. There is ample content available about building the Entrepreneurial (Growth) Mindset at the base of the pyramid, and the INTRApreneurial (Company) Mindset at the pyramid’s middle, so this video focuses on nurturing your Cultural Mindset.

Most of the keys to developing an Interpreneurial Mindset centers on being intentional about getting exposure to and being mindful of cultural differences in other markets. In many ways, this cultural mindset is not about one sweeping action, but a series of small decisions that either enable or prevent a cultural mindset.

Here are some key ways to develop your internal INTERpreneur

  1. Network with other Interpreneurs to better understand their mindset and look for ways to adapt their way of thinking. Involve yourself in international communities. Especially when you are away from your home country, don’t just congregate with people from your own country, connect with locals and members of the international community. We found that many Japanese people, for example, tend to stick together, even in other countries, and this leads them to stay steeped in their own culture, instead of getting a deeper understanding of the market they are in. Build your own international network and friendships

  2. Think about your surroundings. Related to the previous point, put yourself in situations where you can build your cultural and empathetic muscles instead of sticking to the familiar. Live intentionally globally - Be purposeful about designing your environment to encourage yourself to think global

  3. Seek out formative experiences. As outlined in the Interpreneur case studies, most had formative experiences that showed them there was a world beyond their backyard. Seek opportunities to immerse yourself in other countries and cultures.

  4. Step out of your comfort zone

  5. Design your every day so you interact with people from other cultures - take salsa classes, be part of international work groups, attend cultural events, etc

  6. Develop Cultural Agility. People who have shown adaptability in a different culture (or cultural agility) are often more prone to be successful when leading international either on the local team side or support from afar

  7. Broaden your sources of information and media. Instead of just sticking to familiar news outlets from your home country, instead, look to international points of view on key issues. For example, the CEO and Founder of SendBird, John Kim, chose not to consume media from his native Korea, instead opting for other news outlets in markets he was interested in expanding his business to

  8. Choose the right benchmarks. If you want to have a global mindset, don’t just set benchmarks based on local examples. In a quest to build a global business, John from SendBird forbade his team from benchmarking Korean business examples because that would limit the company’s mindset to local aspirations

  9. Think global in every decision you make as a leader/employee within your organization. Don’t just put on a filter of company culture alignment, but think about the local market and even universal cultural alignment
